As more companies take their products and services to the web, Heather Clancy said eCommerce websites should do their best to keep their customers' private information secure. A good way to start is by making sure companies are following PCI DSS guidelines and having data security in line.
Clancy said companies should consider integrating eCommerce backend into a point-of-sale system to help the customer service desk deal with customers, optimize their websites for smartphones and consider mobile payment software.
"The comfort that many people have in selecting and downloading applications to their mobile device, and paying for same either via a carrier or mobile store operator has gotten them more used to the idea that mobile payments might be a better option," Clancy said. "That is something to consider as eCommerce."
According to a study by Javelin Strategy and Research and PaymentOne, four out of five customers would shop online if it was easier and more secure. Companies may be able to attract more customers by proudly sharing PCI compliance and other data security credentials on their websites.
